X Factor USA judges

Yikes. Sorry, Simon, but it doesn’t look like X Factor had that big premiere night you were hoping for and many of us were expecting. According to TV By The Numbers, X Factor USA’s debut brought in a 8.7 rating in the early returns. That doesn’t mean 8.7 million were watching, but rather 8.7% of measured viewing was tuned in to FOX’s new show.

To put that in perspective, American Idol premiered last January with a 14.2 household rating. That means X Factor was about 40% lower than Idol’s 10th season launch.

What does this mean for X Factor? I wouldn’t be too worried just yet. Series premieres can catch viewers off guard so maybe some folks missed it while others were waiting to read reviews of the first episode. Now if we’re half-way through the season and we’re still seeing 8.7 ratings then Simon should be concerned. Until then, carry on, auditions!

Update: TV By the Numbers has more ratings news for X Factor and it’s only slightly better. Simon and company may have won the demographic for 18-49 but they lost out overall to ABC and CBS in the 9PM timeslot.

X Factor ended up with 12.14 million viewers for yesterday’s premiere which really isn’t bad on its own. Let’s see how it holds up.
